The Nature Conservancy’s Hauser Nature Center - Long Pond, PA
The Hauser Nature Center located in Long Pond is the Nature Conservancy’s Northeast Pennsylvania hub for visitors interested in exploring the Pocono plateau region.
The center is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Here visitors can get a great start to their journey in the Poconos by taking a walk along “Cathy’s Trail” which loops through a meadow and the forest, providing excellent opportunities to watch birds and other wildlife.
Information on other trails and area preserves, and a variety of environmental educational materials are also available at the Center. Guided hikes and other community-based programs are offered through the Center, and nonprofit groups are encouraged to consider the Center as a resource for community meetings and events. Our downstairs meeting room can accommodate groups of 30-35 with adjacent kitchen and bathroom facilities.
The Center and the Conservancy’s Long Pond Preserve are located on the Pocono plateau and embody the region’s boreal heritage, harboring species tolerant to cooler temperatures reminiscent of it glacial past.
The Plateau area is a birder’s delight! The mestic till barrens are interspersed in a vast landscape of swamps, bogs, marshes, and shallow ponds surrounded by red spruce, balsam fir, and eastern hemlock woodlands more characteristic of Canada’s northern climate. Scattered across the landscape, numerous bushes and shrubs spark interest throughout the year and attract a variety of birds making Long Pond one of the Audubon Society’s Important Bird Areas of Pennsylvania.
Rhododendron, mountain laurel, and highbush blueberry and huckleberry bushes provide a perfect habitat for songbirds migrating from winter homes in Latin America and the Caribbean. The area also hosts American Bittern and Northern Harrier – bird species not commonly observed in other parts of the region. These moor-like heath lands also boast Rhodora — a rare, pink-flowered, wild azalea that attracts photographers from around the world and makes Long Pond one of the most important moth and butterfly habitats in the state.
