Scenic Bike Trail at Smithfield Beach - East Stroudsburg, PA
The Joseph McDade Trail is a 30 mile bike trail that parallels the Delaware River in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The traffic free , gravel trail has small rolling hills, some challenging hills, and offers outstanding scenery and views of the river. If you park at Smithfield Beach, you can access the most scenic and family friendly 5 mile section of the trail. While you are at Smithfield Beach, take advantage of the picnic grounds and the river swimming area with lifeguards.
If you need to rent a bike, the folks at Edge of the Woods Outfitters offer bike rentals at Smithfield Beach. If you have your own bike and are looking for a full day of riding and want to ride one way, the park service offers a free shuttleon summer weekends. You can download a free map of the McDade Trail on the National Parks website.
Park at Smithfield Beach in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and Ride North (if your looking at the river, North will be on your left). The trail is well marked with a sign. When you hit Freeman Track Road (a dirt forrest service road) make a right and go a couple hundred feet. On your left you will see a historic spring house. A small building that covers spring water coming out of the ground. That is 5 miles from Smithfield beach. Turn around there, continue to ride out the road, or follow the trail through Owens Parking lot to the top of the mountain where there is a beautiful 300 foot boardwalk at Park Headquarters.
