Ideal Farm and Garden Center - Lafayette, NJ
Ideal Farm & Garden is centrally located in beautiful Sussex County on 200+ acres of what had been a 3400 acre Guernsey dairy farm owned by Jacob Tanis, Sr. Ben and Jan Tanis Jorritsma. The trio have operated Ideal Farm & Garden for over 30 years. Ideal grows four seasons, starting out with spring flowers, then all the summer veggies, on to Pumpkin Hollow in the Fall, and then finishing the year with U-Cut Christmas trees.
Ideal also raises a small herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle and goats. The angus trace back to the herd developed by Jacob Tanis, Jr. Starting in Spring, Ideal is open seven days a week except for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Ideal is located at 222 State Route 15 in Lafayette, NJ 07848
In the early 20th century, Jacob Tanis, Sr. came to Sussex County and developed the world's largest herd of purebred Guernsey cattle. His farms came to number over 3400 contiguous acres and supplied milk to much of Northern New Jersey. Later, Jacob Tanis, Jr. raised a prize winning herd of Aberdeen Angus Cattle. Over 30 years ago, Ben & Jan Tanis Jorritsma, established Ideal Farm & Garden Center.
Son Benjamin is actively involved on the farm and son Kyle is experimenting with growing hops. Ideal's motto exemplifies our efforts on this fourth generation farm: "Committed to a tradition of excellence while responding to the need for change"
Activities at this Site
Ideal Farm & Garden's main building is the "Bull Barn." This barn once housed the Guernsey bull of Ideal Farms. This Barn has been converted to a farm store and bakery. There is also a fly fishing store on the premises. There is a picnic area by the goat pen.
On the saturday before Mother's Day, we have an open house. October is Pumpkin Hollow month with hayrides into Pumpkin Hollow, a haunted barn, u-pick pumpkins, hay maze homemade donuts and pies and so much more! Ideal is truly a family destination. We are pet friendly, too.
Seasonal activities including haunted house and hay rides in October and u-cut Christmas trees in December.
Benjamin Jorritsma, Ben & Jan's son, researched and independently built a bio-diesel processor that the farm uses biodiesel from waste cooking oil sourced from local restaurants. This fuel powers all of the farm tractors. Call ahead to arrange a tour of the operation.
Ideal is fortunate to have both the Paulinskill River and the Paulinskill rail to trail running through the farm. The hiking and biking trail accesses so much of Sussex County beauty. Since 2012, under the guidance of Nathaniel Sadjak and Eric VanBenschoten, Ideal has partnered with various conservation entities in the riparian restoration project along the Paulinskill river. Pastures along the river, where dairy cattle once grazed, are being rehabilitated to implement a buffer project to improve water quality. Entities that have contributed to this project include: The Nature Conservancy, The Pinchot Institute, SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group,William Penn Foundation,USDA-NRCS, US Fish & Wildlife and NJ Audobon Society.
